Pinoy male couple weds in UK

Ceremony between 2 Pinoy men first in UK

BIRMINGHAM City, England – Same sex marriage is legal in the United Kingdom, but the union between 2 Pinoy men still gained several differing opinions from the Filipino community.

Many Filipinos have married their British partners since the Civil Partnership for Same Sex Couples was made into a law in 2005.

But the Civil Partnership ceremony of Rolly Marcial and Jojo Capio in Birmingham made history as it was the first union between two male Filipinos in the UK.

Gusto namin masaya. Ganito kami e. Ganito ako at tinatanggap niya ako ng ganito kaya siguro, sana huwag naman kaming kontrahin,” said Rolly Marcial.

“Kaya nagpakasal kami kasi sa aming dalawa, desisyon namin, at dito kami masaya. Alam mo naman siguro kung gaano kita kamahal at ipinaglaban kita,” said Jojo Capio.

The couple’s decision to marry was supported by their friends in UK.

“Tanggap namin siya. Desisyon niya iyan. Mahirap din ang buhay sa UK kung mag-isa ka,” said Stella Chong, a nurse based in the UK.

However, the two failed to get the support of the Catholic Church.

Edgar Dizon, Chaplain to the Filipino community of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

The two expressed their readiness to face the challenges ahead as a married couple.

Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau.
